Papers documenting Nagel's involvement in three areas outside of the museum's administration: I. Jefferson National Expansion Memorial- Nagel's activities concerning the planning and competition for the memorial; he was on the Jury for selection of the design for the riverfront project. II. Christ Church Cathedral- Nagel was a member of the church's administration, and was involved in the design of a new cross, the drive for a new organ, and in architectural work. III. People's Art Center- Survey Report by Betty Chamberlain (additional information in Director's correspondence with People's Art Center during Nagel's administration).

Charles Nagel was born in St. Louis in 1899. After graduating from Yale he worked as an architect, first with Hall & Proetz and then with Coolidge, Shepley, Bullfinch & Abbott, until 1930 when he returned to Yale as Assistant Professor of Art and Curator of Decorative Arts. From 1938-1942 he resumed his career in architecture as a partner in the St. Louis firm of Nagel & Dunn.
